Image 1

The following image represents the value of family as my grandmother and I, her granddaughter are seated together, smiling at the photo being taken. This image represents an ideal family structure where I her granddaughter still have her as my grandmother around which means that we have a stereotypical family structure; grandmother, mother and daughter (granddaughter.) I am smiling and my grandmother has a slight smirk on her well-aged face, the image has a feeling of happiness radiating from it. However, an alternative view reveals that I took the photo of my grandmother and I so that I can look back at the memories we have shared together. My grandmother has Alzheimer’s, she was diagnosed with dementia around 8 years ago and as a result began to forget a lot of things, along with who I am. With full blown Alzheimer’s against her I cherish every moment that she does remember me and even those that she does not. I felt that I didn’t have enough photos of her and I at this age and therefore captured this image, telling her to smile even though she had no idea what I was doing or who I was. To the innocent eye this image appears ordinary, just another photo of a grandmother and her grandchild, but to me or those that know about my grandmother’s condition will understand the image and the reason why I took it. This image represents cherished moments as well as sadness as my grandmother no longer knows who I am due to her having Alzheimer’s.
